The main Early Intervention Service in BC UHB covers Gwynedd and Ynys Mon. This small team of specialist practitioners work alongside general mental health services to provide psychological therapies and support for young people (aged 14-35) who have had or are at risk of having, an episode of psychosis. It aims to provide a prompt, accessible and friendly service, which is flexible enough to meet the needs of young people who may find it difficult to ‘engage’ with mainstream services. Young people are supported for up to three years, in order to help them to stay well, to make sense of unusual experiences, and to find meaningful activity and direction in their lives. In the Central and East areas of North Wales, there is an EIP service available in CAMHS, which we hope to develop in adult services in 2019. Across the region, the EIP collaborates with the Hafal Recovery Practitioner Service in providing a programme of activity and adventure therapy.

The eligibility criteria for EIP are given in the referral form. the service in the West is based in Abbey Road Centre in Bangor: www.abbeyroadcentre.co.uk.

Hafal Recovery Practitioner Support Service

In collaboration with the BC UHB Early Intervention in Psychosis service, Hafal provides a recovery focussed support service, which can work alongside young people who are open to the EIP, for up to three years. We offer individual support in recovery focussed activity. When the young person is ready, we also offer a group based adventure therapy programme with a range of activities involving the natural environment, physical activity, and letting go of the ‘comfort zone’, with therapeutic support on hand. This programme aims to help young people to recover their confidence and involvement activity and social connection and to find new perspectives on their difficulties. Activities include healthy eating workshops, mountain, beach and water sports activities, and sailing.
